The objective in building the Church of God Christian Academy is to obey the Scriptural imperatives of Deuteronomy 6:5-7. "Love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day shall be in thine hearts: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children…”, and Proverbs 22: 6 Train up a child in the way he should go. Teaching is training. Training for life must include training for eternity.
The Arverne Church of God in Far Rockaway, NY, a non-affiliated and non denominational Christian organization, established the church of Christian Academy in September 1988. This school is located on the Rockaway Peninsula in a geographical area marked for and undergoing expansive community revitalization. The Church of God Christian Academy has open enrollment. The school does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, creed, or religion. The Christian academy, accommodating school aged children from K-12th grade, is providing an educational alternative for low-income families who cannot otherwise finance private education. Emphasis is put on individualized needs, use of interactive computerized learning strategies, and development of communication skills.
The Academy uses the fully scope and sequenced School of Tomorrow (A.C.E. Ministries) curriculum. This program, its history beginning in 1970, is designed to allow each student to work at his/her own level of achievement. The students progress through the five basic academic disciplines, Math, English, Social Studies, Science and Word Building (Etymology), in an individualized manner. In this way, the pressure and usual stress of “keeping up” with a group, is removed.
This outcome-based system focuses on individualized learning where emphasis is placed on subject mastery rather than on teaching. Today, it comprises an international network with over 7,000 schools in 142 countries. Currently, the New York and northeast region have over 200 schools using the curriculum.
The School of Tomorrow program provides for academic excellence. Graduate students from the program have been accepted in more than 400 colleges and universities, including military academies, ivy-league universities and technical colleges. Some of our own students were so enriched by this program, that subsequent to completing their studies, they have returned to be educators in the school.
The Christian Academy is dedicated to providing a balanced curriculum to our students. Our children are constantly challenged to a high standard of achievement. Programs offer students the opportunity to build character and leadership skills outside the classroom. Students participate in community service and outreach events. Students perform in choirs at each off 4 honor-roll presentations throughout the school year.
Annual Regional and International Student Conventions challenge students 13 and older to develop their ministry skills by competing in over 150 events in categories like music, speech/drama, athletics, arts, and academics.
The Church of God Christian Academy is housed in a two-story brick face structure that occupies one third of a city block. Our facilities include two computer labs equipped with desktops, laptops, Plato Play stations, and video and projection devices; an indoor gym, and outside playing field.
Our current student enrollment includes students residing in Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island.
